In an old Assyrian text from 400 years BC, vinegar was used to treat earache. Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, used vinegar to treat illnesses. This natural antimicrobial substance is counted among the earliest medicines.
In ancient times (the days of the Prophet Moses, peace be upon him) vinegar was used to treat wounds and inflammation. During the great plague in Europe the name “thieves’ vinegar” spread: reportedly some thieves who broke into the houses of plague victims to steal drank vinegar so as not to catch the disease. Vinegar also saved the lives of thousands of soldiers in the American Civil War, who constantly cleaned and washed their wounds with it.
